The synopsis is this. Yusuke Urameshi was a delinquent by the time he reached middle school and it's stated that he was the strongest fighter not only in his school but in his territory, scaring away other school delinquents who tried to invade. At the age of fourteen, he died. This was unexpected, however, and because of that, the spirit realm decided to give him a chance to revive. He refused at first, stating that everyone would be better off without him, but after seeing his mother in tears at his wake, he reluctantly changed his mind and agreed to undergo the trial. He went on to help several ghosts and in an act of selflessness considered uncommon for him, sacrificed all of his efforts to save his childhood friend from being burned alive. This allowed the head honcho to come in direct contact with his soul and because of that, they agreed that he would be allowed to return back to life. He was not allowed to blissfully continue as he had before, however, oh no. He was roped into being a spirit detective and helping out the spirit world with whatever crisis was currently at hand. His first assignment was to track down three bad guys, two of which end up being highly important. He kills the first guy, but Kurama and Hiei, the remaining two, survive and are forced into helping him out on one of his next missions as 'community service.' As time passes and more events occur, the three, including his rival and sometimes punching bad Kuwabara, become closer as a fighting group and as tentative friends. A lot happens, not all of which I want to get into but can be found in the link, and Yusuke's spirit strength grows in leaps and bounds over time. He is killed again during his fight with Sensui, where it is revealed he is the product of demon atavism. This is where a demon passes down his genes to a human, however, the demon transformation will only occur when a descendant strong enough to handle it appears. Yusuke's body wasn't strong enough the first time around, however, by the time his second death occurred, his time as a spirit detective had allowed him to progress to the point where it could activate. He revived, thanks to this ability, and is considered an S-class demon now; it is unclear in the manga whether he was fully transformed into a demon or is only a half-demon, though it seems to be implying he has become a full demon since he has a 'core' in place of a 'heart' now. After his rematch with Sensui, Yusuke is given a choice whether he wants to return to the human world or stay in the demon world. He answers immediately that he wants to return but once back, he begins to regret his decision a bit. However, he states that it's probably 'like wanting something you can't have' and that he 'probably would have felt the same if he'd stayed [in the demon world]'. He just met the first spirit detective, who told him he needs to return to the demon world and that he isn't suited for the human world any longer.
Personality: Brash and impulsive, Yusuke is a bit obsessed with fighting. And by that, it's more along the lines of wholly obsessed with fighting. He loves a good fight, whether it's watching or joining in (though he can't sit out of a fight for long) and he doesn't mind if it gets a little dirty.
That is not to say, however, that is all he is about. He also has a protective streak to him that is considered surprising. It's the reason that led up to his unexpected death, in fact. His protective streak is strong for kids, the first which is noticeably the boy he died for. He's seen first scolding him for playing by the street, then playing with him to stop him from crying. Later, when he sees a car heading for him, he runs out to protect him, unable to stand by and watch him get hurt or killed. He's increasingly pissed when he hears that he wasn't supposed to do anything, stating he couldn't have possibly stood by while a kid died.
This protective streak extends naturally to the people he's close to, including friends and family. When his childhood friend, Matsuo Suekichi gets in a bind and starts doubting himself, Yusuke jumps in without much thought to help him out and then proceeds to beat him into having confidence in himself. The most obvious and strong protective streak is toward his childhood friend, Keiko. He is shown several times rushing to save her when she's in danger, not caring about the consequences, and his spiritual power notably increases whenever he's worried and protecting her. This protective streak later goes on to extend to his new friend Kuwabara, which is seen when he's supposedly killed, as well as Kurama and Hiei. He is also a bit of an idiot, relying heavily on instinct and luck to survive impossible odds. He shots his spirit gun at a mirror in hopes that it will reflect it like it reflects light, but it's stated he had no back up plan in case that failed. He is entirely too trusting once he fights someone and enjoys it, to the point where despite knowing that Hiei wants to fight him again and probably kill him, and despite having just met up again, he puts his full faith in him to rescue him from a dire situation.
Despite relying heavily on intuition about people, his intuition is revealed to be actually incredibly low. He's given a test to predict jaken (rock paper scissors) and fails miserably. When told he needs to make it through a deadly maze, he crashes straight through it, choosing the most dangerous path. However, considering he has a huge love and need of danger in his life, it could be argued that his intuition is actually very high and only directs him toward dangerous situations and possible allies.
In spite of having such a huge love of fighting, Yusuke seems has a natural charisma to him. He be a violent idiot, impulsive and brash, but he also has a natural ability to draw others to himself. He Chu and Jin in the Dark Tournament, who later look out for him, as well as their allies Rinku and Touya. This charisma only seems to effect other fighters like himself, however, as he also intimidates the normal students at his school and exasperates his teachers. He often used this to his advantage, using the fights Mr. Iwamoto picked with him to ditch school and collecting "name dropping fees" from the other students.
He also has a huge joking nature. When he's first revealed to be the product of demon atavism that he uses this against the SDF to fuck with them, pretending that he's going to take over the world and even that he will eat them. When asked what he intends do now that he's a demon spawn, he says that regardless of what he is, he's still Yusuke Urameshi.
One final note is that his personality has changes slightly thanks to his new demonic nature. As noted in the previous chapter, 156, he refers to humans as a 'food source' without even realizing it. He apparently is no longer bothered with humans being killed and eaten for demons to survive.
Abilities/Additional Notes: He has special powers called spirit energy or Reiki. He has many attacks, the most notable which he is known for is his spirit gun. He has also been known to use it as a defense, however, because it was obvious, he put his shoes on his hands to hide it. He prefers to fight offense rather than defense and rarely uses this technique. A couple other techniques he's used are spirit shotgun and spirit wave.
He sometimes uses certain objects to increase his power. He used the spirit ring to make his attack more powerful. Likewise, he trained with the spirit cuffs as restraints to increase his spirit energy. He is not likely to use or bring the spirit ring, but it is likely that while he might not 'bring' the spirit cuffs with him, he will at least stumble upon them at some point. This is the only likely thing from his world that he is to bring.

He raced down the empty hospital halls, chasing the tail coats of the doctor. He was pretty spry for such an old fart, though. Already he was getting further and further away. Damn it, he couldn't lose him! He was his only ticket out of here and he would use him, even if he had to beat his face in to do it! He'd been on his way to the demon world. He was about to meet that asshole ancestor who knocked up his many times great grand-something or other. Anyway, he still had to pay that demon back for jumping into the middle of his fight. And then he could hear him out about this stupid war and not eating people. Eating people was generally considered bad. He had to remember that. He'd freaked the other spirit detective out when he hadn't batted an eye about demons eating people and kept conversing with the envoy.
Glaring at the now empty halls, Yusuke looked around. He'd gotten distracted and now he'd lost the doctor. "Damn it… Now I'll just have to find some other sucker to get me out of this joint." That thought in mind, he headed down to the lobby. Maybe he could find someone there.
